Training built on strong foundations
My approach to horse training is patient, progressive and centred around building solid foundations. I don’t believe in shortcuts or rushing horses through the process simply to achieve a result within a set timeframe. Whether starting a young horse, retraining an OTTB or developing an established horse, I work at the individual horse’s pace and consider their confidence, understanding, balance and physical development.
I place a strong emphasis on groundwork and believe the fundamentals should be well established before progressing to more demanding work. I won’t rush a horse into being ridden within a couple of weeks, or start jumping simply because they are willing to get over a fence. Each stage should prepare the horse, both mentally and physically, for what comes next. I believe this greatly contributes to reducing the likelihood of potentially severe conflict behaviours under saddle, such as bucking, rearing or bolting.
Training can also focus on specific challenges, such as standing quietly for mounting, desensitisation to new objects or environments, float loading and other handling or ridden issues.
My goal is not simply to get the job done, but to develop horses who are confident, responsive and physically prepared for their work, with training that supports their long-term welfare and soundness.
